The Helix of Life

Remember in biology class when you learned about how the human body is made?  There are carbohydrates, fats and proteins and many different classes of each.  I always found it remarkable how complex the body is and how many micro-structures come together to comprise each of us.  The one thing that I find bdna_croppedmost remarkable is that everything that our body needs to operate is held within a double helix of DNA in each of our cells.  It’s such a small, rather uninteresting piece of matter comprised of only four different types of proteins.  Yet with the billions of combinations possible it regulates every action that occurs in our body.

GMO You

Take that thought and the image next to it, and image that someone took some of that life-regulating DNA, artificially removed a piece of it and added a piece of DNA from a bacteria, and then put it back in you to be a part in forming the next generation of your family.  Oh, and let me add that before scientists began this experiment they did not test if this would have an adverse effect on you or what the possible outcomes might be.  Hmmm….how does that make you feel?

Disturbing the Helix of Life has Life-Altering Consequences

Literally.  Genetically modifying a gene from any species will forever alter the way that gene is expressed and what products it produces.  If the products of that modified gene do not serve the function the body needs for it to serve, it creates a gap that can no longer be filled within the organism itself.  So the genetic structure has to change further to adapt to the initial change, and the possible outcomes of this adaptation are unknown to all.  Besides that, the new products that this genetically modified gene are producing are completely new and unresearched so no one knows what these genes are producing and how they will impact both the organism and the one consuming it.

Do you want to eat that?

256px-cookedcornonthecobIt is becoming a larger and larger concern that the regular consumption of GMO foods is leading to a higher number of food allergies that were minimal prior to their introduction to our food supply.  I personally have developed intolerances to wheat, soy, and corn and I fear that it is due to the consumption of GM foods before I knew what they were.  Foods that, prior to GM foods, the body recognized as a safe form of nutrition are now unsafe and creating inflammatory conditions in the digestive system that leads to other health issues, not only in humans but also in the meat animals that we slaughter and eat.  Research is confirming this more and more, you can read one example here.

  1. So what is a gmo? Think of it like this. We are all made up of DNA. Now someone decided that they could make us better. They wanted to make us resistant to bugs. So they took our DNA and took part of it out and played with it and put a new part in, and then put it back in our bodies. But the thing is, there were no long term testing done to see what would happen if we were resistant to bugs for a long time. And what if we needed bugs and didn’t know it. Well that’s what GMO’s did to our food supply. They changed it so it wasn’t what it was anymore. Now all of our corn, soybeans, and wheat, are GMO. And when non-gmo corn is grown, if gmo corn is grown anywhere close, it becomes gmo because it cross-pollinate with it. There is almost no where on the planet that doesn’t have GMO corn. And we have no idea what it’s doing to our bodies. Well, actually, I think we do. As a nation, we are more obese than ever. How many products have corn, corn syrup, or some form of corn in them. A lot. And wheat is just the same. Why do you think everyone is coming down with celiac disease when in the 1940’s and 50’s it was never heard of before? Because back then wheat was wheat, and now it’s just not. We have to be more careful. Read the labels, know what is going in our food, our medicines, our cosmetics, our skin care products, and the things we use around the home. Because GMO’s are everywhere now, even in glue and molding for your house. Know what is going in your mouth and on your body. It matters.

  4. It’s incredibly scary, GMOs. Having a GMO diet seems to be incredibly difficult. Where would I go out to eat with family and friends? My grocery bill will double buying all organic. I love living a healthy lifestyle and eating “clean” but am I really eating healthy if all my good is GMO based?

    1. Those are very good questions, Kurtis, and difficult to answer. Going out to eat is one of those situations where you will likely have to assume that you are eating GMO foods since the large food suppliers like Sysco are not sourcing non-GMO products. Loomis makes an enzyme called GM-H3 that helps to digest and detoxify GM foods, if you can find a practitioner close to you that carries it that may help you be a bit more at east with eating out. As for healthy eating, I certainly don’t believe that GM foods should be considered healthy for many reasons. Even eating organic doesn’t guarantee non-GMO, so we are entering a difficult era of eating truly healthy. Local natural food stores may be able to tell you if they source guaranteed non-GMO produce. Otherwise, look for third-party verification like Non-GMO Project Verified.

      Best health to you!
